It's OK not to like the game, but have you played other JRPGs? There are a few stand-out games in the history of the genre, but unless you're some kind of JRPG intelligentsia who only plays SMT and Undertale and Xenogears (which becomes mediocre drivel by Disk 2), then you should know that Tales of Arise is on par with or better than much of what the genre has to offer.ĭon’t listen to this man. (Also: I straight-up prefer Tales to those games, even though I love dabbling in obscure JRPGs with lower budgets).Įdit: Also to users calling it "mediocre drivel," lol. If you're OK with that, then I'm sure you will love those games as well - but don't expect to be treated to the visual feast that is Tales of Arise. If you play Ys or Trails of, be prepared for graphics and animation quality dating to PS3 at best. The recommendations by the posters above are certainly beloved franchises, however they are niche. Arise honestly feels like a weird melding of the lush visual art style of Dragon Quest 11, along with the speedy and action-based gameplay of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. If you enjoy big budget JRPGs, FF7 Remake is my top recommendation followed by Tales of Arise. Production values seriously rival the FF7 Remake, although they are going for a much different art style in this game. Aside from Final Fantasy 15, 7 Remake, and the impending Final Fantasy 16 I cannot think of many JRPGs with big budget ambitions like Tales of Arise. I understand the posters I've quoted above don't enjoy the game as much as me, however it depends on what you are looking for. There are at least a dozen moments I've encountered in the game where a typical JRPG trope would have simply said, "We'll solve this problem with friendship," but the writers chose to leave things less tidy and more messy - just like real life. In Arise, people don't always have the answer, and they say as much. Not everyone is a stand out, but the cast and their performances really grow on you as the game goes on. Well-written characters that are done justice by their English dub VO.You're in and out so fast that I actually look forward to battling my way through dungeons Smart design choices in terms of how quickly you begin and end battles.Incredibly fun battle system, although it is feeling a bit more grindy during the end game on Hard difficulty.Stunning visuals, at least on Xbox Series X, which also manages to keep a rock solid 60 fps which feels amazing.I've dabbled in every major Tales game since Vesperia on Xbox 360 (which I intend to go back to), and have fallen off all of them quite quickly.
